Newest Farm Members

Last week, we welcomed a new Jersey cow onto our farm. She brought along her calf and a heifer friend which will also be a future "Bryant Family Farm Milk Cow." We drove about 9.5 hours to pick up our new cows and are thankful for a safe and uneventful trip - with only 2 wrong turns, and an additional 1.5 hours as a result! We are excited to have additional cow milk for our customers.

After arriving home, it was time to milk our "new" Jersey. She was not very excited about seeing her new environment in the dark. Several hours later, the Bryant cow wranglers were wiser, older, and more thankful for a good night's rest than ever before! Delle is now getting used to her new home and Nathan is doing a good job training her for our regular schedule.

Some random hand-milking trivia...

• There are 1500-1800 hand-milked squirts in a gallon of milk
• About 5-8 squirts of milk make a mouthful of milk
• Our cow milkers Nathan and Sarah milk at a rate of 240-340 s.p.m. (squirts per minute), depending on motivation and energy levels
• More than 15,200 squirts of cow's milk are being produced on our farm each day (not including goat milk)
• Our milkers recently figured out how to milk two cows at one time. While it does not speed up the process any, it definitely makes it more interesting!
• Some of our talented milkers can milk five teats at one time. This is still in the perfection process, but once we have it down we'll let you know how it works!
• We are making yogurt, mozzarella and feta cheeses, whey, and butter with our fresh milk, and are in the process of arranging our milk customer pick-up schedule. If you are interested in enjoying fresh milk, contact us!
